Endspurt auf Spanisch / Final spurt in Spanish

Seit Dienstag weht ein südamerikanischer Wind durch das Haus der Heilsarmee in der Talstraße. Ein Team von fünf jungen Leuten, unterwegs im Rahmen von "Jugend mit einer Mission" mobilisiert auch bei unseren erschöpften Mitarbeitern die letzten Kräfte. Das Kolumbia-Team besteht aus einem Sachsen (Ronny, dem Übersetzer), einer Argentinierin und drei echten Kolumbianern. In ihrer Muttersprache Spanisch singen sie, geben sie mutig Zeugnis auf der Reeperbahn und kommen mit spanisch sprechenden Touristen und Passanten ins Gespräch. Ganz ungewohnte Klänge und wieder neue Kontakte.

Since Tuesday a South American wind has been blowing through the Salvation Army's building in Talstrasse. A team of five young people travelling under the auspices if Youth With A Mission mobilises the last resources and flagging strength of our exhausted workers. The Columbia-Team consists of Ronny, the translator from Saxony, a girl from Argentina and 3 real Columbians. In their mother tongue of Spanish they sing, testify courageously on the Reeperbahn und get into conversation with Spanish speaking tourists and passers-by: unfamiliar sounds and again new contacts.




Viele neue Kontakte gab es auch beim Kickerturnier am spielfreien Freitag. Elf Teams traten kämpferisch gegeneinander an. Überragend gesiegt haben zwei Perser aus der Nachbarschaft, die noch die letzten zwei Tage der WM nutzen wollen, um die Übertragungen bei uns im Saal zu sehen.

The table football tournament on Friday (no game on that day) also brought new contacts. Eleven teams fought against each other. The outstanding winners were two Persians from the neighbourhood. They want to use the last two days of the World Cup to look at the matches on the screen in the hall.

Leider müssen wir uns schon Samstag früh wieder von den JMEM-Leuten verabschieden. Sie haben die Zeit in Hamburg wirklich voll ausgenutzt. Nächtliche Freiversammlungen auf der Reeperbahn, Verteilaktionen auf der Fanmeile, Fußball mit den Kiezkids - das volle Programm. Vielen Dank für euren ansteckenden Enthusiasmus etwas für unseren Herrn zu bewirken. Ihr seid uns ein leuchtendes Beispiel.

Unfortunately we have to say goodbye to the YWAM folk on Saturday morning. They really used their time in Hamburg to the full. Night open-airs on the Reeperbahn, distributing material on the fan mile, playing football with the kids from the area –the whole programme! Thank you for your infectious enthusiasm to do something for our Lord. You are a shining example.

Goodbye und Auf Wiedersehen / Goodbye and "Auf Wiedersehen"

Viel zu schnell sind die Tage mit dem UK-Team (England und Nordirland) vergangen. Neben den üblichen Aktivitäten, wie WM-Kriegsrufe verteilen und Fußball spielen wurden auch wieder viele WM-Kriegsrufe verteilt! Aber nicht nur das. Der Sonntag war geprägt durch viel Musik, denn im Einsatzteam gab es einige sehr begabte Musiker.

The days with the UK team (England and Northern Ireland) went far too quickly! Besides the normal activities, like distributing World Cup War Cries and playing football, … there were a lot of World Cup War Cries to be distributed. But not only that. Sunday was shaped by much music, for the visiting mission team had several very talented musicians.



Die Miniband in der Freiver- sammlung auf der Reeperbahn lockte wie immer Schaulustige an und ein Anbetungslied im Gottesdienst erfreute die Gottesdienstbesucher.

The mini-band in the open-air meeting on the Reeperbahn attracted spectators as usual and a worship song in the meeting blessed the congregation.

Den letzten Tag verbrachte das Team dann entgegen aller Erwartungen nicht im Minibus auf der Autobahn, sondern beim Shoppen auf der Mö' und beim Barbeque am Elbestrand. Teuer, lecker und absolut erholsam. Vielen Dank für Euren Einsatz auf St. Pauli! Eine Menge Kriegsrufe sind unter die Fans gebracht worden. Zum Dank habt Ihr blaue Flecken vom Bolzen und tiefe Schatten unter den Augen von den Nachtschichten bekommen. Mögen die Eindrücke, die Ihr mitnehmt Euch motivieren auch im eigenen Land mutige Zeugen für Jesus zu sein.

The mission team spent their last day not stuck in a traffic jam on the Autobahn, as they had expected, but shopping on Mönckebergstrasse and barbequeing beside the river Elbe. Expensive, delicious, and absolutely relaxing! Thanks so much for your commitment in St. Pauli. Huge amounts of War Cries were distributed to the fans. Your thanks were bruises from the kids' soccer pitches and dark rings under your eyes from the late nights! May the impressions you gained here motivate you to be brave witnesses for Jesus in your own country.

Die Welle schwappt über / The flood spills over

Wie in den meisten deutschen Austragungsorten, überfluten die Fans die Grenzen der zu kleinen Fanmeilen. Auch in Hamburg reicht die Reeperbahn längst nicht mehr aus, um nach einem Sieg der deutschen Mannschaft gemeinsam Party zu machen. Die Talstraße wurde inzwischen mit einbezogen. Auch hier wälzt sich der Strom der Fans und laut hupende Autos vorbei, sozusagen direkt vor unserer Haustür. Ein Schritt vor die Saaltür reicht, um Kontakt mit Menschen aus St. Pauli und dem Rest der Welt zu bekommen. Unermüdlich sind Korpsleute, das internationale Team und das Missionsteam im Einsatz. Es gibt immer noch WM-Kriegsrufe, die unter die Leute gebracht werden sollen!

In most of the German World Cup cities the fans flood over the perimeters of the too small Fanmiles. In Hamburg too the Reeperbahn is not large enough to hold everyone who wants to party after a German victory. Talstrasse has also been "integrated". The stream of fans and tooting cars pour down the road right in front of our door. One step outside the hall door is enough to make contact with people from St. Pauli and the rest of the world. People from the corps, the international team and the missionteam are tirelessly in action – we still have World Cup War Cries waiting to be distributed!

Drei Wochen kontinuierlich weit geöffnete Saaltüren lassen Schwellenängste schwinden. Es gibt neue Stammgäste, die sich kein Spiel im schattigen Korpssaal entgehen lassen. Unzählige Gespräche finden an den kleinen Bistrotischen im Cafe statt. Über Fußball natürlich, aber auch über Gott und die Welt.

More than three weeks of having the hall doors standing wide open have let people overcome their fear of coming in. We have new regular guests who never miss a game in our shady hall. Countless conversations take place at the little bistro tables in the Café – about football of course, but also about God and the world.

Kein Spiel und trotzdem Spannung im Kickoff-Treff / No game but still tension in the Kickoff-Café

Damit am spielfreien Mittwoch keine Langeweile aufkam, wurde ein Kickerturnier im Kickoff-Treff organisiert. Sieben Mann- bzw. Frauschaften traten gegeneinander an. Am Ende konnten sich die Gewinner über Tickets für ein St. Pauli Spiel in der nächsten Saison freuen. Zum ersten Mal war unser Café nicht nur von Erwachsenen, sondern auch von vielen Kindern aus der Nachbarschaft bevölkert. Auch die Einsätze auf den Bolzplätzen waren an diesem Nachmittag erfolgreich. Die sportbegeisterten Helfer trafen viele spielbereite Kinder und Teens, so dass dort neue Kontakte geknüpft wurden.

So that no boredom should crop up on the Wednesday with no matches on, a table football tournament was organised in the Kickoff-Café. Seven teams, men and women, took part. At the end of the competition the winners could look forward to tickets for the St. Pauli Football Club next season. For the first time our café was full not only with adults but also with lots of children from the neighbourbood. The activities on the playgrounds were also successful this afternoon; the sports enthusiasts in the mission teams found a lot of children and teenagers wanting to play football with them, so many new contacts were made.

Die vereinigte Musikkapelle (Hamburg, Barmstedt und England) veranstaltete ein Freikonzert auf der Talstraße. Nachbarn wurden durch die schwungvolle Musik an die Fenster gelockt und applaudierten. Mit dem Kriegsruf in der Hand schwärmten Helfer aus und kamen ins Gespräch mit vorbei schlendernden Passanten.

The united bands of Hamburg, Barmstedt and England gave an open-air concert on the street. The lively music lured neighbours to their windows: they applauded. Helpers swarmed out with War Cries in their hands and contacted passers-by.

Beim Kampf um den Sieg, Marie-Louise und Christin, die schließlich auf Platz drei landeten und damit die beste Frauenmannschaft waren.

Herzliches Willkommen für das UK Team / A warm welcome to the UK team

Nicht nur die Hamburger Korpskapelle war hocherfreut über die Verstärkung aus dem Vereinigten Königreich. Zwei Iren und sechs Engländer bilden das Team von der britischen Insel, das in den nächsten Tagen auf dem Kiez im Einsatz sein wird. Sechs von ihnen spielten in der Heiligungsversammlung am Sonntagmorgen mit. Man beachte die Bassbläserin auf dem Foto in der hintersten Reihe!

Not only the Hamburg corps band was very happy to see the reinforcements from the United Kingdom. Two irish and six English young people form the team from the British Isles which will be active round St. Pauli in the next days. Six of them played in the holiness meeting in the band on Sunday morning. Notice the female bass player on the last row in the photo!



Fußballbegeistert aber auch musikalisch hochbegabt sind sie alle gekommen, um die verschiedenen Kickoff-Aktionen in Hamburg zu unterstützen. Für das Korps und die Missionsteamler geht es immerhin schon in die zweite Phase und manch einer sehnt sich nach Abschalten und einem freien Tag. Da kommen die ausgeschlafenen und frisch eingeflogenen Briten gerade recht. Das zweite Foto gibt einen Eindruck vom Begrüßungs-Barbeque im Hinterhof des Korpsgebäudes. Vermutlich die ersten von vielen deutschten Bratwürsten, die in den nächsten Tagen von der Gruppe verspeist werden.

Enthusiastic for football but also musically very talented, they have all come to help and support us in the various Kickoff-activities in Hamburg. For the corps and the Hamburg mission team things are now in their second phase, and some of us dream of relaxation and a day off. So the wide-awake Britons flown in fresh are more than welcome!

Gute Nachrichten! Good news!

Das heutige Hamburger Abendblatt berichtet in einem großen Artikel, dass die Geschäftsinhaber auf dem Kiez (St. Pauli) von großen Umsatzeinbußen sprechen. Die Befürchtung, die WM werde Tausende ausländische Prostituierte nach Hamburg locken, hat sich nicht bestätigt. Die Panik war unbegründet, es lassen sich keine Veränderungen beobachten. Ein "Hotelinhaber", der Zimmer an Prostituierte und ihre Freier vermietet spricht von völliger Flaute. Nur 5 % des üblichen Umsatzes wird gemacht. 5 % sind immer noch zuviel, aber die Erwartungen, viel mehr Umsatz in diesem ausbeuterischen Gewerbe zu machen, haben sich in keinster Weise erfüllt.

Today's Hamburger Abendblatt, the largest regional daily, reports in a long article that the businessmen in St. Pauli are talking about a large loss of turnover. The fear that the World Cup would lure thousands of foreign prostitutes to Hamburg has not been confirmed. The panic was groundless, no change to be observed. A "hotelier" who rents rooms to prostitutes and their customers speaks of an absolute fall-off in trade. Only 5% of the usual turnover is made. 5% are still too much, but the expectations of making much more money in this exploitatious business have in no way been fulfilled.

Die Informationen aus diesem Artikel decken sich mit den Beobachtungen unserer zwei Prostituiertenmissionarinnen. Die zwei Heilssoldatinnen unseres Korps, die kontinuierlich mit Bibeln und Kakao ausgestattet, Kontakte zu Prostituierten in unserem Stadtteil pflegen, freuen sich über große Offenheit bei den Frauen. Weil das "Geschäft" schlecht läuft, haben die Frauen Zeit für Gespräche. Weiter beten!

The information in this newspaper article is identical with the observations of our two missionaries amongst the prostitutes. The two female soldiers of our corps, who regularly contact the prostitutes in our part of the town, taking with them Bibles and cocoa rejoice over the openness of the women. Because their "trade" is not doing well, the women have time to talk. Keep on praying!

Endlich angekommen! Arrived at last!

Nach einer mehr als chaotischen und schier endlos dauernden Anreise ist das Team aus dem Vereinigten Königreich endlich heil in Hamburg gelandet. Unser ganz besonders herzlicher Dank für spontane und überaus großzügige Hilfsbereitschaft geht an dieser Stelle an unsere Kollegen aus Köln. Liebe Leute aus dem Eric-Wickberg-Haus - vielen, vielen Dank für die zusätzliche Meile, bzw. die zusätzlichen Kilometer, die Ihr auf Euch genommen habt. Insbesondere danken wir Ivor Edwards und seinen Leuten; Bruder Laudien, für die Bereitschaft den Tag auf der Autobahn zu verbringen, damit das UK-Team samt Gepäck heil bei uns ankommt.

After a more than chaotic and seemingly endless journey the team from the United Kingdom arrived in Hamburg in one bit. Our very warmest and heartfelt thanks to our Cologne colleagues for their spontaneous and generous assistance. Dear friends from Eric-Wickberg-House: many, many thanks for all the extra miles or kilometres you took upon yourselves. Special thanks to Ivor Edwards and his folk and to Brother Laudien, who was willing to spend the day on the autobahn so than the UK team and their luggage arrived safely in Hamburg.

Das Team kam dann gerade noch rechtzeitig für einen kleinen Snack und die donnerstägliche Coffeebar. So bekamen die acht jungen Leute schon mal einen kleinen Vorgeschmack auf die vor ihnen liegenden Tage. Zwei Menschen haben sich am Ende der Coffeebar bekehrt, das macht Mut, sich mit Feuereifer und Gottes Kraft in die Arbeit zu stürzen.

The team arrived just in time for a little snack and Thursday's coffee bar. This way the 8 young people got a first little taste of what is lying ahead of them in the next days. Two people got converted at the end of the coffee bar, so that encourages everyone to throw themselves into the task with enthusiasm and God's strength.
